About

BOOKSTRAVAGANZA (est. 2011)

For the last four years, we, as a group of friends, have challenged ourselves to a readathon: for the month of December, we try to read as many books as a group as we can and blog about our experiences.

We’ve received a lot of positive attention from our family, friends, and community as they follow our struggles to dedicate every spare moment to reading and as we share the revelations we’ve had while doing so.

Two years ago, we added a fundraising component to the competition as we wanted to give back to the community. With the help of friends and family, we raised over $500 for the Indigo Love of Reading Foundation in our first year, and last year, we raised over $1000 for Edmonton Public Library’s Welcome Baby Program.

Everyone who participates in Bookstravaganza understands how fortunate and privileged we are to have been raised with access to intellectual freedom and books with which to foster a love of reading. We are aware that not everyone has this opportunity, which is why we want to support the Edmonton Public Library’s Literacy Vans program.  Location and transportation issues should never be a barrier to having access to books and libraries.  To learn more about the Literacy Vans program, please visit the EPL’s website.

As a group, our goal is to read 100 books this month.  Can we do it? (We can read a lot of books).  We are asking people to pledge a certain amount of money for each book that either an individual or the whole group (if they’re feeling even more generous) reads. We will also accept straight donations in case people don’t want to take the risk of donating too much (some of us can read a lot of books!).

You can donate to the cause through our page on Canada Helps!

The Challenge
The idea of Bookstravaganza is simple: Read as much as you can in a set limit of time, with a group goal of 100 books.  For 2015, that limit of  time is 12:01 a.m. on December 1st, 2015, to 11:59 p.m. on December 31st, 2015.

There are rules.
1) Only books that you’ve never read before count toward your total.
2) There is no minimum page count for a book, but books over 700 pages count as two.
3) You must blog about the books you read so everyone else is aware of your progress.
