Neverhome, Laird Hunt

“I was strong and he was not, so it was me went to war.”

This book, this story. It will stick with me. Neverhome is the tale of Ash Thompson (an alias), a woman who joins the American Civil War in a men’s uniform. A loose retelling of The Odyssey, Laird Hunt imagines Penelope driving determinedly into war and Odysseus staying home.

Hunt does his characters great service throughout, never letting them get away with anything for too long, but never letting us, the reader, get away with anything at all. The book is hard and grimy and beautiful.
