Bound, Donna Jo Napoli

Bound is a really neat retelling of the classic Cinderella, set in the north of China during the Ming dynasty. Cinderella stories have cropped up in cultures across the globe in all times, and according to the author’s note, some of the earliest are from China.

The story is simple and an easy read, but still fun. I didn’t love it the way I’ve loved a lot of my Bookstravaganza books, but I’m still glad I gave it a read. What’s really neat about Bound is the way that the Chinese custom of foot binding plays with the symbolic importance of the missing shoe famous to Cinderella stories. If you like adapted classic fairy tales, Bound isn’t a bad place to turn.
